Since antiquity, pomegranate has been hailed as the symbol of fertility, posterity, strong marital relationship, beauty, and eternal life. This nutrient-dense scarlet-coloured fruit is rich in antioxidants, vitamin C, vitamin K, potassium, folate and fibre. Its rich, juicy flavour not just satisfies the taste buds but also gives immense health benefits. It improves overall cardiovascular health, lower blood pressure, and boosts good cholesterol.

It also controls blood sugar levels and testicular oxidative stress. It is highly beneficial in boosting the male sex hormone testosterone that regulates fertility, muscle weight, fat distribution, and blood cell development. It is present in women too in small amounts and leads to women's sex drive, bone density, and strength of their muscles.

Testosterone levels are at their peak in early adulthood and tend to fall with age. Once men cross the threshold of 40, the concentration of testosterone in the blood drops by about 1.6 percent every year. If testosterone levels fall below healthy levels, conditions such as hypogonadism or infertility can occur. In various researches, it has been found that pomegranates act superbly as a testosterone booster.

In one such study conducted by Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh, on 58 men and women of age group 21-64, it was found that participants who drank a glass of pomegranate juice daily for 15 days had an increase in the levels of their testosterone levels by 16 - 30 per cent. There was a significant drop in the blood pressure of participants with high blood pressure. It reinforced positive feelings and reduced anxiety in all the participants.

Pomegranate helps to improve the production of testosterone by enhancing the antioxidant activity. It is highly rich in Punicalagins, a potent antioxidant that is thrice the antioxidant value of red wine and green tea. A study conducted on 28 healthy male Wister rats for seven weeks suggested that consumption pomegranate juice enhanced sperm quality and antioxidant levels of the rats.

In a recent study published in The Endocrine Society's Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism (JCEM), it has been revealed that higher concentrations of testosterone is associated with lower muscle loss in middle-aged men, especially those who were trying to lose weight. Regular consumption of pomegranate helps men to maintain their muscle mass even after weight loss.

Testosterone is responsible for achieving and maintaining an erection. It stimulates the receptors in the brain to produce nitric oxide that further triggers a series of chemical reactions required for an erection. Therefore, low levels of testosterone in men causes difficulty in achieving erections. Pomegranate can help to protect nitric oxide from damage, boost nitric oxide production, and enhance the synthesis levels of nitric oxide.

Another animal study done on rats concluded that both pomegranate juice and pomegranate fruit extract were able to boost the levels of nitric oxide synthase and increase the concentration of nitrates in the blood. Both the folklore and medical science research support the use of this luscious fruit to enhance potency in men. It has a positive impact on the overall well-being of both men and women.

Being a natural aphrodisiac, pomegranate increases the libido and improves both the mood and memory. It is undoubtedly a worthy addition to your passion basket!
