For some years, The erectile dysfunction was quite a significant issue; however, for the past few years, it is no longer a problem without a solution. Since the emergence of Viagra (sildenafil) in 1996, several other drugs have been developed for the treatment of impotence that has shown to have excellent levels of effectiveness.

Today, many men wonder what the similarities and differences between these medications are and how to choose the one that best suits their specific needs.

Viagra or Tadalafil: Which is better?                                                              Here are the main characteristics of sildenafil (viagra) and tadalafil and the differences that exist between them.

• Mechanism of action: Both sildenafil and tadalafil have similar mechanisms of action. The three substances inhibit the activity of an enzyme called phosphodiesterase type 5, which regulates the contraction of smooth muscles in the corpora cavernosa of the penis. When any of these medications inhibit the action of this enzyme, smooth muscles relax and allow blood to enter the penis, provided there is sexual stimulation.

• Side effects, precautions and contraindications: Because the mechanisms of action are similar, the possible side effects and contraindications are also very similar in both medications. Patients who use medicines or drugs containing nitrates should avoid using these substances. Those who are being treated with alpha-blockers or beta-blockers (for high blood pressure) and those with heart, kidney or liver problems should consult a doctor before using sildenafil or tadalafil.

The possible side effects of these substances are: headache, flushing, dyspepsia, nausea, nasal congestion, blurred vision, muscle aches, back pain and rash. Very rarely they can cause syncope, an abrupt decrease in blood pressure and heart problems as well.

Sildenafil (Viagra)                                                                                               Developed by Pfizer laboratories and patented in 1996, sildenafil (Viagra) was the first medication for the treatment of erectile dysfunction authorized for commercialization in the United States, on March 27, 1998.                                    

The usual presentation of sildenafil is in 50 mg tablets. The recommended dose is one pill, although the effectiveness of the drug increases if 100 mg is taken. It is recommended to take sildenafil one hour before starting sexual activity. However, for the medicine to start acting quickly, it is best to keep a considerable time gap between the medication and your meals, especially those with high-fat content.                                                                                                                                

The effect of Viagra lasts for 4 to 5 hours. It has an adequate level of effectiveness in the treatment of erectile dysfunction in young people and psychogenic erectile dysfunction, among others.

Tadalafil (Cialis)                                                                                                         Developed by the ICOS company and marketed by Eli Lilly and Company, tadalafil (Cialis) was approved in the United States for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in 2003. It was the third drug approved for the treatment of this condition.   Tadalafil can be found in 5 mg, 10 mg and 20 mg tablets, although the recommended dose for the treatment of erectile dysfunction is 20 mg. The main difference between sildenafil and tadalafil is the duration of its effect, which can last up to 36 hours. That's why many call it "the weekend pill."Another advantage of tadalafil is that its absorption is not affected by the intake of fatty foods or alcohol.

So how to choose the medicine that suits me best?                                 Tadalafil has essential advantages over Viagra. However, some people might be allergic to it. It is always advisable to consult a doctor and take small doses to test the tolerance and effectiveness of the medication. Remember, consuming either tadalafil or viagra, or any other such substance without consulting an expert can cause some severe health issues.
